Polly Apfelbaum, “The Potential of Women”

Apfelbaum latest installation consists of gouaches, ceramic plaques and large bannerlike paintings spread out on the floor that all revolve around the illustrations in a 1963 book titled, The Potential of Woman—which, as its name suggests, treated its subject with a patronizing tone. Using the book's midcentury aesthetic as a starting point, Apfelbaum demolishes its retrograde attitude with a lively Feminist deconstruction of its contents.
