The show begins on a note of truculent evasion. Jackson, played by the gifted Broadway newcomer Myles Frost, is in rehearsal for his Dangerous tour—a year before the superstar was first publicly accused of sexually abusing a minor—and the number they run is “Beat It,” a song about the importance of avoiding conflict. “Showin’ how funky strong is your fight,” sings Michael, prefiguring the musical’s approach to his life. “It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or right.”

MJ is manifestly aimed at people who either believe in Jackson’s innocence or who are able and willing to enjoy his work despite questions about his guilt. (He was acquitted of some accusations in court, but others have followed.) There are many such people, and the production serves them handsomely. The design is deluxe: dazzling period costumes by Paul Tazewell, a smooth set by Derek McLane, flashy lighting by Natasha Katz, vivid arrangements by Jason Michael Webb and David Holcenberg. Meredith Willson’s 1957 classic should sweep you up in a happy spell of suspended disbelief—much as its reformable-rascal hero, the fast-talking traveling mountebank who calls himself Professor Harold Hill, does to the easily misled citizens of a small town in 1912 Iowa. And who better to cast such magic, one might think, than Hugh Jackman, a bonafide movie star with real musical-theater chops, who has already played a charming charlatan on film as the sucker-seer P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman?

Yet while this Music Man is a solid and professional piece of work, and includes many incidental pleasures, the hoped-for enchantment never arrives. The production has reassembled much of the top-shelf creative team behind the thrilling 2017 Bette Midler revival of Hello, Dolly!, including director Jerry Zaks, choreographer Warren Carlyle and designer Santo Loquasto. And as in Dolly, it has surrounded its star with well-proved talents: Broadway darling Sutton Foster as his local foil, the wary librarian Marian Paroo; Marie Mullen as her excitable Irish mother; Jefferson Mays and Jayne Houdyshell as River City’s malaprop-prone mayor and his fussy wife; a loosey-goosey Shuler Hensley as Hill’s old friend and accomplice. The vehicle is polished; what it lacks is drive.

Details

Address: Winter Garden Theatre, 1634 Broadway, New York , 10019

Cross street: between 50th and 51st Sts

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009290203646336690.post-28422784424686762602022-02-25T12:44:00.004-08:002022-02-25T12:44:33.002-08:00Dear Evan Hansen (film)

Dear Evan Hansen is a 2021 American musical coming-of-age film directed by Stephen Chbosky from a screenplay by Steven Levenson. It is based on the stage musical of the same name by Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul. Ben Platt plays the title role, reprising the performance that he originated on stage five years earlier. The ensemble cast also includes Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Colton Ryan, Danny Pino, Julianne Moore, and Amy Adams.

The film premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2021, as the opening night presentation and was theatrically released in the United States on September 24, 2021, by Universal Pictures. The film underperformed at the box office and received largely negative reviews from critics, who compared it unfavorably to the stage musical. Platt's performance was poorly received by critics and audiences alike, the latter of whom mocked his performance on social media with many claiming he was miscast in the role and others accusing his casting as a sign of nepotism. At the 42nd Golden Raspberry Awards, the film was nominated for Worst Director for Chbosky, Worst Actor for Platt, Worst Supporting Actress for Adams, and Worst Screen Combo for Platt and "any other character who acts like [him] singing 24-7 is normal".

<span style="font-family: Arial; The book, in this exhibition, is complemented or subverted, with artists investigating the tradition of artist’s books as an artistic structure, storytelling in visual art, the narrative possibilities of language, the communicative potential of storylines, and the object-ness of material in circulation. In including prints, sculptures, and works on paper that explore the design and aesthetics of language, this exhibition celebrates the relationship between reading and making. This is the first time visitors to the museum can see the 21 renovated galleries and more than 500 works that are now enhanced by the natural light from the new skylights, according to the Met. with an exhibition of newly commissioned works by the American
artist Lucy Raven. Following a three-year engagement with Dia, Raven
presents a kinetic light sculpture occupying the entirety of the
former Alcamo marble-cutting factory on West 22nd Street in New York
City. In an adjacent gallery, she exhibits a film that was shot over
two years at a concrete plant in Bellevue, Idaho. Together, these two
projects explore properties of speed, pressure, and materiality (both
geological and synthetic) in the context of the American West. An
Arizona native herself, Raven’s practice often considers the
complex histories of this region’s formation and depiction, as well
as its contemporary role in global commerce, communication, and
development. In doing so, her work engages the legacy of the Land
artists that Dia has supported since the early 1970s. Incorporating
moving images, photography, sculpture, and sound, her immersive
installations address issues of labor, technology, and the hidden
mechanisms of power.

pleased to announce its forthcoming exhibition,
Theodoros Stamos (1922 – 1997) featuring paintings,
sculpture and works on paper from the 1940s to the 1990s. This
exhibition demonstrates how the natural world was a source of
inspiration and imagery throughout his career.

Theodoros Stamos,
the youngest member of the first generation of Abstract
Expressionists, was born in New York to Greek parents. In 1936 he won
a scholarship to attend American Artists School where he studied
sculpture until 1939 when he left to focus on painting.
Beginning in 1941 he ran a frame shop where he met Arshile Gorky who
played an influential role in his early biomorphic paintings. In 1943
Stamos had his first solo exhibition at the Wakefield Gallery, which
was run by Betty Parsons. During this period he also met Adolph
Gottlieb and Barnett Newman who wrote about Stamos’ painting with
great praise.

Associated with both the Vienna Secession and Jugendstil at the turn of the twentieth century, Klinger became famous as a poster designer in Germany, eventually returning to Austria to found a studio at the outbreak of the First World War. He would stay in Vienna, with two short visits to the United States, until his deportation to a Minsk extermination camp, where he died in 1942.

Klinger’s artistic reputation was built on the strength and range of his designs, which often shared a signature style characterized by graphic simplicity and directness—whether in the form of illustrations, graphic ornament, or his most famous posters. An advocate of “Americanismus,” and the progressive attitudes towards modern business and media coming from across the Atlantic, he understood the power of modern trademarks and logos to give identity to major businesses and manufacturers, and was a leading figure in shaping the look of major brands. Through Klinger’s life and examples of his work drawn from The Wolfsonian’s collection, this exhibition explored issues of identity—personal, corporate, and national—as well as the impact of cultural displacement on the history of design, and the role of commercial art in the modern city.

Artists on show

JULIUS KLINGER

Contact details

Website +1 917 722 2439 Get in touch

Sunday - Saturday11:00 AM - 6:00 PM119 W. 23rd Street Chelsea - New York, NY, USA 10011
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2009290203646336690.post-27167532918406251352021-01-05T08:27:00.002-08:002021-01-05T08:27:15.092-08:00"Cinematic Illumination" by Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) , Midtown West

Until Sunday February 28 2021

Photograph: Courtesy the artist and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

In 1969, Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver conceived of an immersive moving-image event created by beaming images from 18 slide projectors across the Tokyo discotheque Killer Joe’s. The resulting Cinematic Illumination had the effect of transforming frame-by-frame film projection into a 360-degree environment intended to meld with the sound, lights, and moving bodies in the underground venue. Gulliver created the nearly 1,500 slides from film footage of everyday actions and magazine imagery, imbuing one of the period’s most spectacular multiple projection works with a do-it-yourself attitude.

Gulliver had staged performances since he was a teenager in the Kansai region, before hitchhiking to Tokyo in 1967 with the intent to pursue filmmaking. There, Gulliver joined a vibrant scene in which art was staged outside of gallery spaces and cinema was expanded to multiple projections or moved off-screen entirely. Mankiewicz and his development of the screenplay for Citizen Kane (1941). Directed by David Fincher, based on a screenplay by his late father Jack Fincher, the film was produced by Ceán Chaffin, Douglas Urbanski, and Eric Roth. It stars Gary Oldman in the title role, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tuppence Middleton, Tom Burke, Joseph Cross, Jamie McShane, Toby Leonard Moore, Monika Gossmann, and Charles Dance.

David Fincher's father Jack Fincher wrote the script in the 1990s, and David originally intended to film it after he completed The Game (1997), with Kevin Spacey and Jodie Foster as the leads. canvas, aluminum, linen, or wood, paper has a special resonance for everyone. It
is what we used in school to create cards for our parents, or to create a
masterpiece at age 7 when we were all artists.

Now as
professionals, paper offers a thousand possibilities. We can sketch, draw and
paint, collage, sculpt, create books, wall hangings, and photographs or allow
the paper to be the art. In this challenge we invite the artists to engage in a
conversation with paper in whatever way they imagine. The paper is the thing!
