Wayne McGregor

Wayne McGregor talks about his future art projects and dreams on NewYorkio.

What are you working on at the moment?
I am just at the stage of beginning research on a project which will be influenced by climate change, they will be fictions but it will hopefully show what is happening to the environment around us. There will need to be a lot of research and then there will be the task of securing funding for it. It is my first project since finishing my education last year so we will see what happens.

Where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration mainly comes from cinema, for the `Something A Little More Cinematic` series I was influenced by films that include Hitchcock`s `Rear Window` and J.A. Bayona`s `The Orphanage`.
What is your dream project?
It would probably be to create a series that has the size and scope as well as the budget that Gregory Crewdson had for `Beneath The Roses` although the pressure that would come with that would be huge.

Is the artistic life lonely?
I don`t think so, image capture is such a small part of the process so there are often times where I am working alone but if there are people around you who you can talk to about art then that obviously helps.

What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life?
In terms of work it would be to create imagery I am proud of which is then hopefully appreciated by others and in life I guess it would simply just to be content with my life, nothing more than that.
What’s your favorite piece of work that you have created?
It would have to be Untitled 1; you have this vision in your head as to what the image will look like but it doesn`t often come out the way you hoped, but that one did.

Artist Statement
The purpose for the images is for the viewer to create a narrative from a single image; these stories may vary from person to person because people see things differently from one another. This is why I have chosen to leave the images untitled, so it leaves some ambiguity whereas words can be definitive. I have never worked with lighting in this way before however I feel it is important to challenge myself otherwise there is not as much satisfaction in creating new work. My influences come from various mediums which include music, cinema and other photographers that include Gregory Crewdson, Philip Lorca diCorcia and Erwin Olaf which is perhaps one of the reasons why most of my work is quite melancholic.
