An interview with Meta Solar

We spoke with Meta Solar about her art and artistic goals. The artist portrays young women in a surrealistic manner merging their skin with plants, fruit or patterns surrounded by backgrounds of dripping colour and translucent layers. Meta Solar is a very talented artist with promising days ahead.
What role does the artist have in society?
The artist is someone who takes the time to explore and express aspects of society, that most people don't have the time to think about. At the same time, the artist can choose to create things that are beautiful, even if they are uncomfortable.

What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently continuing the series of faceless portraits and figures. At the same time I am working on some illustrations and collage.
What else should we know about you and your work?
I am inspired by a lot of different things and am experimenting with different media. I mostly paint in oil, but I love water-colour, drawing, collage. I used to make comics and am trying to get back with that as well.
What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life?
Continue to be inspired, to create good work and show it in other countries as well. I would also like to make a graphic novel, or illustrate some books.

What’s your favorite piece of work that you have created?
It is very difficult to have one favourite piece. I have a few, that are very special to me, but usually because of the memories connected to them. For example this watercolour which is very different from what I do now: metasolar.si

Short Cv
Meta Solar (b. 1989) is a painter based in Radovljica, Slovenia. She studied and received her diploma in painting at the academy of fine arts in Ljubljana. She exhibits nationally and internationally. She lives and works in Radovljica, Slovenia.
Artist Statement
She portrays young women in a surrealistic manner merging their skin with plants, fruit or patterns surrounded by backgrounds of dripping colour and translucent layers. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our personality is questioned. She fantasizes a mode of portraiture that overcomes the tyranny of the body. By co-opting the language of the hyper-feminine spectacle, her work exploits the troubled relationship of femininity and beauty to representations of vulnerability and power. Drawn to images where the feminine is staged as a prop for power, she appropriates images from art history and contemporary culture in order to strip, destroy or dismantle them. Every painting is a reflection of thoughts and feelings she experiences during the time period of creation. Influenced by contemporary artists, old masters, her admiration of nature, Japan and fantasy her art is in a constant state of development.
