NewYorkio had an interesting interview with the talented artist Khairzul Ghani.
Enjoy the interview!
What role
does the artist have in society?
Artists are
the sensitive lot, who see the tilted plain around them the earliest. It's
their role to first question it, share it and present it in their work.
What are
you working on at the moment?
I'm working
on series of small size expressive portraits made with thick oil paint and
palette knife. It's my take on freedom of expression in portrait painting,
breaking the boundary of what is normally perceived as beautiful in portraiture
without losing the aesthetic value.
What else
should we know about you and your work?
That I
never have formal art education and I use palette knife mainly to reduce
contact with turpentine during painting due to allergic reaction.
What are
your goals for the future, both work wise and life?
That I could free myself from the
boundary of commonly perceived 'beauty' in creating art work. I am still very
much dictated to make 'beautiful' work presumably for my own ego. Work wise, I
hope to be more confident and convincing in my interpretation and expression.
What’s your
favorite piece of work that you have created?
It's hard
to point out which one of my own creation as most favourite. There're many of
them, however the common themes in my favourite works are mostly due to sentimental
reason. 'Coming Full Circle' is one of the latest one of my favourite work
because after few years of experimenting different style, I created this one,
which interestingly reminisce to a work from 2 years ago. Only with extra
confidence and more polished.

Artist
Statement
I paint to
express what fascinates me. Most of the input in my life are a collections of interpretation,
based on intellectual deduction or just plain gut feeling. What I paint, is
merely a translation on the canvas, a way of expressing my view or reaction to
the daily life. I paint mainly with palette knife with thick paint and bold
colour. I love colours and textures in my work. It could be due to my tropical
country origin. I look at painting as a form of expression and liberty.
