Justine Kurland, “Girl Pictures, 1997–2002”

Part of a wave of women photographers coming out of the Yale MFA program in the 1990s, Kurland distinguished her work by re-interpreting the American landscape through a feminist lens, inserting girls in the flower of their youth within verdant settings that suggested an Eden without men. Ranging in tone from contemplative to joyful, Kurland’s photos also foregrounded the vulnerability of her subjects against the backdrop of nature.
