Celebrating
its 42nd year, the Village Halloween Parade is a New York institution. Master
puppeteer Ralph Lee started it in 1974 as a children’s trick-or-treating walk
from house to house in Greenwich Village; the next year, the Theater for the
New City stepped in to turn the local promenade into a full-scale production.
The parade began to go through more streets, attracting more awareness and
participation.
Last year,
in addition to floats and outrageously detailed costumes, I saw jacked-up
vintage cars decorated with all things spooky, helmed by skeletons as they bounced
along the route.
It is your
time to have fun with your friends! The Village Parade is currently a nonprofit
organization, and anyone in costume can participate via signup or sponsorship.
